So Mitt, about those tax shelters...

Awwwwwkward.

Romney and Ryan were on 60 Minutes this evening and, well, Ryan threw out this little nugget about tax shelters:

Let me repeat that: "What we're saying is, take away the tax shelters that are uniquely enjoyed by people in the top tax brackets..."

You know, uniquely enjoyed by the likes of, oh... Mitt Romney.

Surely Ryan has heard about Mitt's sheltering of much of his wealth in exotic locales like Switzerland and the Cayman Islands.

The look on Mitt's face, with just a tiny, almost imperceptible twitch when Ryan mentions tax shelters, is, as they say, priceless.

**********

Ryan actually makes a very good point here.

Not so much about the right-wing desire to lower tax rates even further, mostly for the rich of course, which is where he was going with this, but about closing off those opportunities mostly for the rich to put their money in offshore tax shelters, reducing what they pay in taxes proportionally well below the vast majority of Americans and also significantly reducing general revenue.

But is Mitt okay with that? Or is he just happy he'd pay virtually no taxes were Ryan's budget plan to be implemented? Maybe that's the trade-off.

  • I saw this bit and the couple of minutes surround it. There were so many misleading and outright false statements that I had to turn away.

The main thing that bugged me was the focus on making things fair. Fair?! Their policies are designed to keep the rich rich and prevent anyone else from becoming rich. I especially like their idea of ending the estate tax. That'll really provide an equal playing field for the next generation: you got a quarter of your dad's $200 estate and I got a quarter of my dad's $6.2 billion estate. See: equality!

  • The have-nots are the do-nots. You can complain about conservatives wanting to reduce taxes and curb spending, but you have no concerns about those who would take whatever they can get with no remorse. Unemployment, up; the deficit,up; the USA international reputation, down; the economy, stagnant and declining. Michelle Obama spends millions in international travel for no returned value... Romney pays 14% in taxes, which amounts to millions, but you say nothing about 49% of the people who pay NO taxes. As Doc Holiday famously retorted: my hypocrisy has its limits.
